TSU Confucius Institute successfully held two Chinese immersion summer camps in 2017.

From May 29 to August 25, for the first time since its foundation in 2013, Texas South University Confucius Institute (TSUCI) has successfully held two Chinese immersion summer. This has made great achievements in spreading Chinese language and Chinese culture.

In order to enlarge the influence of Confucius Institute in teaching Chinese and spreading the Chinese culture, it is necessary to ensure the high quality of teaching. Before the start of the summer camp, TSUCI has carried out two training sessions involving collective lesson preparation, classroom presentation and discussion to fully prepare the volunteer teachers for the summer camp.

From June 5, 2017 to June 29, ‘TSUCI - Global Learning Village Chinese Immersion Summer Camp’ was successfully held. Since Chinese class has always been an important course in the curriculum of the Global Village Primary School, the Chinese summer camp has received the attention from the whole schools and parents. 18 students with excellent performance in Chinese course have been selected to participate in this summer camp. TSUCI offered students a variety of language and culture classes. In the morning, students immersed in the Chinese classroom instructed by local teacher Ling Zhang, slowly learn the basic Chinese expressions. In the afternoon, students attended culture classes tutored by TSUCI volunteers Xiaomeng Han and Yuanjing Liu where they experience many activities such as calligraphy, painting, paper cutting, martial arts, reading Chinese stories and practing gymnastics to Chinese music.

From May 29 to August 25, TSUCI held a Chinese immersion summer camp in Huaxia Chinese School where a total of 140 students attended. Confucius Institute volunteer Yabao Wang taught the courses such as martial arts and poetry appreciation. Yawen Cao taught courses such as calligraphy, Chinese painting, paper cutting, crafts. Closely related to Chinese culture, these courses enable the students to appreciate the beauty and profundity of Chinese culture.

From May 29 to August 25, TSUCI held a Chinese immersion summer camp in Houston Dragon Academy where 150 American students were enrolled .Despite the heavy teaching tasks, TSUCI Institute volunteer Mingchi Zhang, Tianxuan Bai, Zhijie Ren,Chenxi Du, actively assume courses of Chinese language and Chinese. In the morning, they gave courses of Chinese and math to the students. In the afternoon, they gave various courses such as clay, opera, paper-cutting, as calligraphy, Chinese painting, paper cutting, crafts. All these provide students with a good learning environment of learning Chinese language and experiencing Chinese traditional culture.

Although the summer camps were long and tiring, TSUCI volunteers said they made full devotion to teaching, hoping to further deepen the understanding of Chinese culture among the American people. TSUCI will also make persistent efforts to develop more programs to further promote Chinese and Chinese culture in the Houston area.
