Dr. Roger Hart Director

BIO

Roger Hart is director of the Texas Southern University China Institute and professor of Chinese history. He is author of The Chinese Roots of Linear Algebra (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010) and Imagined Civilizations: China, the West, and Their First Encounter (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). He has received fellowships from ACLS, NEH, and Mellon. Previous appointments include Seoul National University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Chicago, Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Harvard. He earned his PhD from UCLA in history, and his MS from Stanford and BS from MIT in mathematics.

Dr. Xiao YI Chinese Director

BIO

Dr. Xiao YI 易晓 is the Chinese Director the Texas Southern University China Institute. She is professor and chair of the Department of Design in the School of Architecture and Design at Beijing Jiaotong University. She earned her Ph.D. from Tsinghua University, her M.A. from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, and her B.E. from Hunan University. Her research interests include design and design history. She was a visiting professor at Brunel University (UK) and University of Twente (The Netherlands). She has supervised students of design awards at home and abroad, including works nominated for the Red Dot Award. She has received the “My Favorite Teacher” award at Beijing Jiaotong University.

Xiaobin HU,PhD, associate professor of Chinese Institute, Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU),graduated in 1988 in Beijing Language and Culture University,which started first the major of teaching Chinese as a second language and is among the foremost universities in this field in China, majored in teaching Chinese as a second language and minored in English. She was among the first few graduates majoring in teaching Chinese as a second language in China and was also among the first teachers who received the Certificate of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language as well as Certificate of Teaching in Colleges and Universities in China. She has been teaching Chinese as a second language for 30 years, including 2 years as a guest professor at University of Vienna in Austria from October 2001 to June 2003. Professor HU is now teaching Chinese credit courses at Texas Southern University with an appointment period of 2 years from Aug. 2017 to Aug.2019.Professor HU received her doctorate degree in 2007, majored in linguistics and applied linguistics. Her main research area of interest is modern Chinese grammar and the teaching grammar. Professor HU has published more than 10 articles in refereed journals such as Language Teaching and Linguistic Studies,Chinese Teaching in The World, Chinese Language Learning. Her textbook Chinese Conversation for Foreigners—The Road, 2002, Beijing: Beijing Language and Culture University Press, is very popular in China and had been translated in several languages and used abroad.

Zhen ZHOU,also called as Jay ZHOU, He is currently a Chinese volunteer teacher in Texas Southern University. From 2010 to 2014, he majored in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in Guangxi University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Chinese Language and Literature, Guangxi University. After that, he earned his Master degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Guangxi University in Jun. 2017.His research fields include experimental phonetics and teaching approaches of Shengdiao (four tones of Chinese Mandarin). In the past few years, he has published Acoustic Experimental Research on Chilean High School Students’ Acquisition of Mandarin Monosyllabic Tone, Chinese Teaching notes in Chile and Acoustic Experimental Study of Monosyllabic Tone to YiBin Dialect. From Oct. 2012 to Feb. 2013, he worked as an intern, teaching Chinese Mandarin at Ngiurai Boomeerangsarit High School in Thailand. From Aug. 2015 to Jul. 2016, he worked as a Chinese volunteer teacher at Francisco Araya Bennett Commercial Institute in Valparaiso,Chile.

Zhuo LI ,she is a volunteer teacher at the Texas Southern University China Institute. She earned her M.A. from Xi’an International Studies University, majoring in Teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. Xi’an University is one of the earliest 4 foreign language institutions established in new China. Her research area focuses on second language pedagogies. Her postgraduate dissertation introduces the application of theme-based teaching model in training American college students to organize paragraphs orally in Chinese at intermediate level. LI is qualified for Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages and Certificate for Teachers of English in High School. She is an experienced Chinese teacher. Yu WANG,she has been majoring in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages for six years. Her second major is English. She graduated from Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Hubei University, which is a key university in China, in 2016. Her graduation dissertation is named outstanding graduation dissertation. She is now continually study for her master’s degree in Wuhan University in the same major. Wuhan University is one of the top five universities in China. During undergraduate period, she worked as president of Volunteer Association in her college. She also worked as an intern Chinese teacher in International Education College of Hubei University before she worked as a Chinese volunteer teacher in Texas Southern University.She passed Chinese Mandarin Proficiency Test in high grades. She also has many  traditional Chinese talents such as traditional instrument Erhu (Certificate of Level 8), Chinese calligraphy.Now she works as a Chinese volunteer teacher for Texas Southern University China Institute. She has taught Chinese in an after school Dragon Academy and Hope Center. She wants to study the difference in the aspect of self-regulated learning between American learners and Chinese learners in the second language acquisition (SLA). Heng ZHANG, he From Shanghai University, is currently a Chinese volunteer teacher in Texas Southern University. From 2012 to 2016, he majored in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in Taishan University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Chinese Language and Literature, Taishan University. He was earning his Master degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Shanghai University since September 2016. YING YIN, she is currently a Chinese volunteer teacher in Texas Southern University. From 2011 to 2015, She majored in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in Anqing Normal University and earned her Bachelor degree .During 2015 to 2017,she studyed in Huazhong University of Science and Technology ,one of the top twenty universities in China.From 2016 to2017,she worked as a full-time Chinese teacher in Gumam Elementary School , South Korea. Her research uses two textbooks, "Happy Chinese" and "Awesome Children's Chinese," as the research object. According to the relevant theories of writing Chinese textbooks for foreigners, compares the two textbooks according to the principles of practicality, science, and interest. Through comparative analysis and combined with teaching practice, some suggestions for the preparation of textbooks for foreigners are proposed.

During the studies in Shanghai, he has been teaching Chinese for so many people who come from different countries and nations including Korean and Japan and North America. In 2017, he won the Third place in a competition named Chinese Language Teaching Idols which is very famous in the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language field. He is good at playing Tai Chi too because his hometown is Jiaozuo, a city located in Henan province of China which is the original city of Tai Chi’s development, so he has been practicing Tai Chi from 7 years old and he learned a lot from one master of Tai Chi. He is also interested in singing and won the name of “Top ten Singers” in one competition which judged by all the students of ECNU in 2016. Besides, hard-pen calligraphy is one of his strong point because his dad is good at handwriting and has a great influence on him. Yuanman ZENG,graduate student of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, one of the top fifty universities in China, major in TCSOL(Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). Professor Chen Ying holds a M.Ed. in TESOL from New England University, Australia and a B.A. in English from Inner Mongolia Normal University. She visited University of Minnesota Duluth as a visiting professor in Cross-Cultural Education in 2010. She is an associate professor and the former director of Chinese Language Training Center for International Students, BJTU.

Yu Chang Visiting Scholar

Yu Chang is a senior lecturer of Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), one of the most prestigious universities in China. She joined the faculty of the School of Languages and Communication Studies at BJTU in 1996. Currently she is a visiting professor of Chinese Language at the Texas Southern University. Her research interests focus on second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, bilingual education, classroom discourse analysis and instructional technology. She is currently leading four fully funded research projects as a principal investigator. Professor Chang also has strong interests in diverse cultures.

Dr. Austin A. Lane is the 12th president of Texas Southern University (TSU). Dr. Lane assumed leadership of Texas Southern on June 6, 2016. He is committed to focusing on student recruitment and maintaining strong enrollment and retention policies at TSU.Dr. Lane’s academic passion includes student academic productivity and growth, and he is dedicated to producing TSU graduates who will be prepared for the global marketplace. His major priority includes keeping TSU strong and independent, and maintaining its stature as a premier HBCU. native of New Jersey, Dr. Lane graduated from Hackensack High School and attended Odessa Junior College in West Texas on a basketball scholarship. He holds a B.A. in psychology from Langston University (the only HBCU in Oklahoma), M.A. in human relations from The University of Oklahoma, and Ed.D. in higher education administration from The University of Alabama.Dr. Lane was appointed Executive Vice Chancellor of Lone Star College in January 2015. He was the lead administrator for Academic Affairs, Student Services, Workforce Education, Corporate College, Honors College, International Programs, Strategic Planning and Assessment, and University Centers in The Woodlands and University Park, among a host of responsibilities. He served as the third president of Lone Star College-Montgomery for six years, leading an institution that experienced the fastest growth in Texas and the nation.

Roger Hart is director of the Texas Southern University China Institute and professor of Chinese history. He is author of The Chinese Roots of Linear Algebra (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010) and Imagined Civilizations: China, the West, and Their First Encounter (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). He has received fellowships from ACLS, NEH, and Mellon. Previous appointments include Seoul National University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Chicago, Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Harvard. He earned his PhD from UCLA in history, and his MS from Stanford and BS from MIT in mathematics

Dr. Bin Ning President, Beijing Jiaotong University

BIO

Professor Ning Bin is the President of Beijing Jiaotong University. He holds a PhD, M.E and a B.E. in Railway Signaling from Northern Jiaotong University (Beijing Jiaotong University since 2003) and visited UC Berkeley as a senior visiting professor from 2002 to 2003. He is the former Director of the Foreign Affairs Office and Vice President from 1997 to 2008. Professor NING Bin is the People's Representative of the 13th People’s Congress of the Beijing Municipality and has served as member of the Institute of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE), Senior member of IEEE, the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and China Railway Society, Deputy Director of China Traffic System Engineering Society and Beijing Railway Society and member of China Overseas Returned Scholars Association, AE of IEEE Trans ITS, ACTA AUTOMATICA SINICA and the Journal of Railways in China. President NING is Chair of the TSUCI Board of Advisors.

Professor Guan Zhongliang is the Vice President of Beijing Jiaotong University. He started to work January 1989. He graduated from the Northern Jiaotong University with major in computer technology and computer applications in July 1986 and January 1989 respectively. He received a bachelor degree in engineering and a master of engineering degree. In April 2002, he graduated from Northern Jiaotong University, majoring in industrial economics, working in economics. Ph.D. He has served successively as a teacher of economics department, director of the Institute of Economics and Management and Information Systems, dean of the China-Australia Business School, vice president of the School of Economics and Management, deputy division chief and division chief of the Planning and Finance Department, and member of the Standing Committee of the Daqing Municipal Party Committee and deputy mayor of Heilongjiang Province. The ninth and tenth party committee members and standing committees of the school. He is currently the Standing Committee Member and Vice President of the 11th Party Committee of Beijing Jiaotong University.

Pro.LIU Yanqing, Director of Center for International Education at Beijing Jiaotong University(hereafter referred as BJTU). BIO

Dr. Xiao YI 易晓 is the Chinese Director the Texas Southern University China Institute. She is professor and chair of the Department of Design in the School of Architecture and Design at Beijing Jiaotong University. She earned her Ph.D. from Tsinghua University, her M.A. from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, and her B.E. from Hunan University. Her research interests include design and design history. She was a visiting professor at Brunel University (UK) and University of Twente (The Netherlands). She has supervised students of design awards at home and abroad, including works nominated for the Red Dot Award. She has received the “My Favorite Teacher” award at Beijing Jiaotong University.
